What Factors Affect The Insulation Resistance Value Measured By A Transformer Comprehensive Test Bench?

The insulation resistance value measured by a transformer comprehensive test bench is influenced by a variety of internal and external factors. Understanding these factors is essential for accurately assessing the insulation condition of a transformer.

1. Factors Related to the Transformer's Condition (Intrinsic Factors)

These are the core aspects that the insulation resistance test aims to evaluate.

Insulation Material Quality and Aging:
The type and condition of insulation materials (e.g., insulating paper, transformer oil, epoxy resin) significantly impact resistance. Aging degradation reduces resistivity.

Moisture or Water Ingress:
Moisture is a major cause of insulation resistance reduction. It increases conductivity, lowering resistance readings.

Temperature:
Insulation resistance is highly temperature-sensitive. Resistance decreases as temperature rises and increases as temperature falls. Measurements are often corrected to a standard temperature (e.g., 20°C or 40°C) for accurate comparison.

Surface Cleanliness:
Contaminants like dust, oil, or salt on insulation surfaces create leakage current paths, leading to falsely low resistance readings. Proper cleaning and use of a guard terminal during testing can mitigate this.

2. Testing Conditions and Environmental Factors (Extrinsic Factors)

These are external variables that must be controlled and documented during testing.

Ambient Temperature and Humidity:
High humidity can cause surface moisture, increasing leakage current and lowering readings. Tests should ideally be conducted in dry conditions.

Discharge and Charging Time:
Discharge: The transformer must be fully discharged before testing to avoid residual charge affecting results.
Charging (Absorption Time): Readings must be taken at specific intervals (e.g., 15 seconds and 60 seconds for absorption ratio, or 1 minute and 10 minutes for polarization index) to assess insulation health accurately.

Test Voltage Level and Stability:
The applied voltage (e.g., 500V, 1000V, 2500V, 5000V) must match the transformer's rating. Unstable voltage can lead to inaccurate readings.

Test Equipment Condition:
The accuracy and calibration of the test equipment, as well as battery charge level, can affect results. Regular calibration is essential.
