Oil DGA

Oil Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) is a separation and analysis technique for multi-component mixtures. It primarily utilizes the differences in boiling point, polarity, and adsorption coefficient of each component in the sample to separate them within the chromatographic column. These separated components are then qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed to evaluate the health of transformer insulation oil. DGA is one of the most effective methods for detecting early faults and preventing transformer failures.

Oil DGA uses gas as the mobile phase (carrier gas). When the sample is injected into the port and vaporized, it is carried by the carrier gas into a packed or capillary column. Due to differences in boiling point, polarity, and adsorption coefficient, each component is separated within the column. A detector connected to the column then identifies each component based on its physical and chemical properties. The data is transmitted to a chromatography workstation via a serial port or network, where the gas chromatogram of each component is recorded and analyzed to generate an analysis report.

Due to its high separation efficiency, fast analysis speed, and low sample consumption, this method is widely used in various industries, including petrochemicals, biochemistry, pharmaceuticals, health and safety inspection, food inspection, environmental protection, and medical clinical practice. Gas chromatography has significantly contributed to quality control, scientific research, pollution detection, and industrial process monitoring in these fields.

Why is Oil Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) Important?

Transformers generate gases due to electrical and thermal stress, leading to the decomposition of insulating oil and solid insulation. The types and concentrations of these gases provide critical insights into potential faults, including:

Overheating

Arcing and partial discharge

Fire hazards

Insulation degradation

By analyzing these gases, maintenance teams can detect early-stage failures and take preventive actions before catastrophic damage occurs.

Applications of Oil Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA)

DGA is an essential diagnostic tool in transformer maintenance and electrical equipment monitoring. It enables preventive maintenance by identifying gas patterns associated with potential faults. The following are its key applications across industries:

Power Transformers in Electrical Grids

Monitors high-voltage transformers in transmission and distribution networks.

Detects early-stage faults like overheating, arcing, and insulation breakdown.

Prevents costly power outages through condition-based maintenance (CBM).
